Common Questions About Us and Services
Q1: What is an ambulette?
A: An ambulette is a vehicle designed to transport people in wheelchairs. It is essentially a Ford passenger van that has been specifically modified for wheelchair transport. It has been fittied with a custom high top roof to allow maximum headroom, a Braun hydraulic wheelchair lift, which can accommodate up to 700 lbs, specialized tracks and tie downs, as well as seats for up to 7 people.
Q2: Do you take Medicaid?
A: Yes! 1st Choice Ambulette is a New York State licensed Medicaid provider.
Q3: Do you take Medicare?
A: No, unfortunately, Medicare does not directly cover the cost of ambulette service.
Q4: Can you bill my insurance directly?
A: It depends. Some insurance companies cover ambulette services, and we would be happy to bill them, but some do not. Please contact us, and we'll help determine if your insurance company will pay for the services, and the best method for payment.
Q5: I’m up a flight of stairs, and I can’t manage them on my own. Will you carry me down?
A: Yes! 1st Choice Ambulette is a full service ambulette company, which means we provide carry down service.
Q6: How far in advance do I need to book your service?
A: Usually, we prefer 24 hour notice to book a transport. However, some times circumstances do not permit this, and we always try our best to accommodate last minute reservations. Your best bet is to call and ask. We try to avoid overbooking, as it can diminish service quality.
Q7: After you drop me off at my appointment, how long will I have to wait for my ride back?
A: Our policy for return trips is generally first come first served. Return times can depend on many factors, such as the distance of your trip, the location of your drop off, the time of day (traffic), etc... However, we do ask that you call us when you are completely ready to leave, and finished with your appointment.
Q8: Can the driver wait for me?
A: Yes! Our standard service is to drop off, and then return when you are ready, however if you'd like, the driver can wait for you at your appointment. However, there is an additional fee for this service. Please call us and ask us for details.
Q9: Do you provide a wheelchair?
A: Yes. Every 1st Choice Ambulette is equipped with a wheelchair for our patients' use. However, we can not leave the chair with you after you are dropped off, unless you opt for the driver to wait.
Q10: Will you lift a patient out of bed and put them in a wheelchair?
A: Unfortunately, no. Our drivers are not allowed to handle patients directly. We can help with a patient transfer, but we can not do it directly.
Q11: Do you provide stretcher service?
A: No. If you need to go by stretcher, you'll likely have to go by Ambulance. However, we can arrange an ambulance to pick you up. Please call and ask about it.
Q12: Do you provide oxygen?
A: No, only Ambulances provide oxygen in New York State.
Q13: Can you take me if I’m on Oxygen?
